	annote = {The generation of autonomy in evolution  a surveyThe hypothesis is advanced that major evolutionary innovations are characterized by an increase of organismal autonomy in the sense of an emancipation from the environment After a brief overview of some new aspects of the question of macroevolutionary innovations from recent scientific results and the literature on the concept of autonomy a series of examples of increasing autonomy in animal evolution from different macroevolutionary transitions is discussed These examples start with prokaryotes which show several basic characteristics of autonomy and continue with the generation of the eucaryotic cell multicellularity and basic features of multicellular animals finally some examples from the evolution of vertebrates are given including examples from ethology}
