N2 - Human and animal play is both a fascinating and puzzling phenomenon Its origin and function cannot be conclusively explained within conventional evolutionary theory However nowadays there exist extensive accounts and scientific descriptions that can provide us with a wealth of well documented material This article gives a brief overview of play in various animal groups Then it develops the thesis that play logically follows the autonomy theory of evolution and therefore can be explained in evolutionary biological terms It is both phylogenetically and ontogenetically an important element in the creativity of human beings and possibly over and above that in the whole of evolution
