Abstract:

The effect of curative eurythmy on the rhythmical system

In anthroposophical medicine, eurythmy is used therapeutically in

many cases and with different forms of disease. We report on two studies in which the effects of this therapeutic approach were studied with respect to the rhythmical-functional order of cardiac and respiratory rhythms.

In one study (RI-IEINGANS 1983) the effects of eurythmy were compared with those of a conventional endurance training (ergometer bicyn cle). This was done in two groups of spa-patients during their 4-weeks stay.

In the other study (MÜNCH 2000) the patients of the department of psychosomatic medicine of the Gemeinsehaftskrankenhaus Herdecke were obscrved. In this study, eurythmy was performed as one part of the complex therapeutic concept.

In both studies, heart rate, respiratory rate and the pulse-respirationratio (Q P/A) were measured before and after the treatment. ln both studies, eurythmy resulted in a better balance of the autonomous nervous system. The most important long term effect was a tendency to normalization of the pulse-respiration ratio. In all groups observed there was a trend towards the normal ratio of 4 (heart beats) to 1 (breathing). This could be observed in the clinic patients (study 1). Here the normalization effect was even more pronounced in the patients treated With eurythmy compared with the group of patients treated with enduranee training.
