Abstract:

Rudolf Steiner wrestled with scientific issues already early in his youth. His education was also initially focussed on the natural sciences and technology. However, the natural science he encountered there, which was characterized by a materialistic conviction, could not satisfy him. He was searching for a scientific way of thinking that was open to a spiritual perspective. First of all it was the inadequacy of the concepts of space and time, which preoccupied him at large. Later it was the prevailing doctrine of the nature of light as a wave in physics and the theory of development in biology that challenged him. These controversies led him to Goethe. He developed a theory of knowledge that justified Goethe's method and at the same time could harmoniously combine his own view of nature and spirit. He founded what he later represented as anthroposophy as a natural further development of natural science. For him, anthroposophy was therefore never a contradiction to a correctly understood natural science. Later, in the course of his engagement for anthroposophy, he also gave proposals for an enhancement of the sciences and especially the natural sciences. In three courses on science for the teachers of the first Waldorf school, he spoke specifically about physical topics in particular and developed far-reaching ideas. In the second part of this essay, themes from these courses are compiled. These include taking up and tying in with current research results, an acknowledgement of the development of human consciousness and a corresponding development of scientific methodology and phenomenology as a modern starting point for natural science. Rudolf Steiner always formed scientific concepts in connection with the human being, whereby it was important to him to consider the human being in his physical and spiritual-psychic totality in the context of the entire cosmos. The living (in anthroposophical nomenclature: the ethereal) is recognized as an independent entity and from this a new concept of time and space is formed that is adequate for understanding life. By juxtaposing the development of scientific questions throughout Rudolf Steiner's life and the corresponding answers as subjects of the overall impulse, the personal significance and continuity of this topic for Rudolf Steiner become clear. He found answers to his early youthful questions through the development of anthroposophical spiritual science. The compilation of the themes results in an overall picture that makes the unity of this impulse clear and can be an aid to working on scientific topics on the basis of Steiner's ideas.
